The Defense Freedom of Information Policy Office (DFOIPO) is responsible for the formulation and implementation of FOIA policy guidance for DoD.

Defense Privacy And Civil Liberties Office
The Defense Privacy and Civil Liberties Office is responsible for the implementation of the DoD Privacy and Civil Liberties Programs. The programs are intended to provide a comprehensive framework regulating how and when DoD collects, maintains, uses, or disseminates personal information on individuals.

Like all federal agencies, DOJ generally is required under the FOIA to disclose records requested in writing by any person. However, agencies may withhold information pursuant to nine exemptions and three exclusions contained in the statute.

FOIA Denial Authorities
When information is withheld, whether partially or fully, this constitutes a denial under FOIA. A request may be denied for one or more of the FOIA exemptions. When this happens, you will be notified in writing by an Initial Denial Authority (IDA) and given appeal rights. IDAs are denial authorities for records that fall under their functional areas.
